Basset Hound Breeders

Basset Hound Breeders present their dogs and puppies on their personal websites and webpages, so that potential buyers can learn all there is to know about the breed in general and a particular dog. For those who would like to have a short-legged and long-eared cutie in possession, it is absolutely imperative that they purchase from conscientious breeders, who do not breed for profit.

Basset Hounds are low set and heavy-boned dogs, with a somewhat sad countenance and absolutely friendly disposition. These dogs are very popular around the world as companion dogs, but many purebred Basset Hounds can still be used for hunting. They are quite enduring, intelligent, and they have an enviable sense of smell. The Basset Hound is an old breed of dogs, descending from the Bloodhound. The breed’s name is derived from the French term “bas”, meaning “low”. Responsible Basset Hound Breeders are very knowledgeable about the breed’s history and they can share interesting information with their potential clients.

The Basset Hound stands 12-15 inches high at the shoulder, and the length exceeds the height by far. Along with its characteristic body proportions, their long ears, thoughtful eyes and easy-going temperament are the most endearing features. These dogs have a shiny coat, which is very easy to groom. The coat comes in various colors, since there are no strict color limitations. Most Basset Hounds come either in white and tan or red, or in white and tan (red) and black. Many Basset Hound Breeders prefer to breed dogs with white tail tips. The dog’s tail is long and held in an upright curve. The loose skin on the face forms characteristic folds, which makes the dog look sad. The eyes are brown and a little sunken.

Although Basset Hounds are sweet and gentle, they are quite stubborn, and hence they require a specific way of training. Breeders have long been concentrating their efforts on the dog’s scenting abilities, which have developed to such an extent that it can be distracting during training sessions. It takes a great deal of time to teach a Basset Hound to say no to his nose and concentrate on the task. For this reason, Basset Hound Breeders do not usually recommend these dogs for novice owners who cannot afford a professional dog trainer.
