It is a unique breed, very peculiar looking and gentle. The first dogs of this breed were registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885. It is a true hunting dog that was bred for hunting small game. All its physical characteristics are functional, beginning with long ears that help to hold the scent, to the short legs, which make it easer for a hunter to follow the dog on foot.
